The Shannon Trust has released some literacy statistics related to it's prison reading scheme for August 2005. Comments in shaded areas are from Toe by Toe.

Number of Prisons/Establishments

Of all the prisons in England, Wales and Northern Ireland

• Only 9 have had no contact or copies of Toe by Toe
• A further 24 have had no contact with the Trust in 2005
• We are also operating in all STCs (bar 1) and in 6 places within the community mostly YOT and hostels

• Adding the 146 English and Welsh prisons listed at the H.M. Prison Service website to the 4 prisons in Northern Ireland, these figures represent over 95% coverage of UK prisons with over 80% active - a staggering achievement by Christopher Morgan OBE and the Shannon Trust.
• STC's are Secure Training Centres of which there are 4 with one planned for Wales.
• YOT's are Youth Offending Teams.

Number of Mentees

• The number I can verify of mentees currently on the programme is 954
• I would have every reason to believe this is about 50% of the true number based on the number of books distributed and the constant change and flux

• Mentees are the learners. The total number at anyone time will always be difficult to measure as people move in, out and around the prison system daily. Some additional figures that we can be sure of are the number of Toe by Toes issued to the Shannon Trust reading Scheme - a very close approximation of new learners. The numbers charted below include books waiting to be issued to learners.
  
• It has been almost impossible in the past to follow learners who are part way through Toe by Toe when they leave prison. There is hope that this will improve given the latest news from NAPO - The Trade Union and Professional Association for Family Court and Probation Staff. See Page 3 of their June 2005 Newsletter.

Number of Mentors

• The current number of mentors that I can verify on the programme is 583
• These are supplemented in some YOIs and STCs with Learning Support Assistants as often in the juvenile estate they do not trust the offenders to be mentors.
• Also within YOTs Advocates teach using the manual on a one to one basis
• Again I would have realistically thought that we could increase this number by at least 50%

Other FACTS

• We have distributed 5099 manuals (till 31st July 2005)
• We have accredited 891 graduates (which I would again have no hesitation in saying represents 50-100% short of the true figure)
